All drivers owe each other a duty of care. Essentially, this means that they must not place one another in danger. For the most part, drivers take their responsibilities and safety seriously.
Unfortunately, there are occasions when drivers are reckless, negligent and even aggressive. In fact, aggressive driving or “road rage” is thought to contribute to as many as 50% of all fatal road traffic collisions.
What can you do to protect yourself from aggressive drivers? Here are some tips:
Do not engage
Often, aggressive drivers are simply looking for a reaction. They may be taunting you in the hope that you respond, ask them to pull over or engage in dangerous driving yourself. While it can be difficult, you mustn’t rise to the bait. A direct response to the driver will only escalate the situation and increase the chances of someone being hurt. One useful step that you can take is to ignore the aggressive driver and allow them to get away from you. If they are behind, then let them pass.
Find a safe place to stop
If the aggressive driver won’t let up, despite you not responding, then it may be time to think about pulling over. Choose a safe place to stop. You shouldn’t stop anywhere that’s unsafe or isolated and you shouldn’t leave the vehicle. Find a spot that’s open to the public and full of witnesses. Once you have come to a halt, you can think about alerting the authorities. If you can, note down a description of the driver and details about the vehicle.
Facing an aggressive driver can be traumatic and dangerous. If you have been injured in a road rage incident, you may be entitled to financial compensation for your pain and suffering.
