Why are grass clippings so dangerous for motorcyclists?

On Behalf of | Aug 7, 2023 | Motorcycle Accidents

Driving a motorcycle brings with it a sense of freedom and adventure. However, it also comes with a unique set of hazards, one of which is not often considered: grass clippings on the road. Although it may seem harmless or even an odd concern, grass clippings pose a significant danger to motorcyclists.

When grass clippings are left in the street, they can create an incredibly slippery surface, particularly when fresh. The risk amplifies if the clippings get wet from dew or rain. For motorcyclists, this can be as hazardous as hitting a patch of black ice. The tires can quickly lose traction, causing the motorcycle to slide out from under the rider without warning.

What can homeowners do?

Homeowners play a crucial role in mitigating this risk. When mowing, they should aim the discharge chute of their lawnmowers toward their yard, not the street. After mowing, it’s also a good idea to sweep or blow any grass clippings that have ended up on the road back into the yard.

Grass clippings can be difficult to impossible for motorcyclists to spot on the road. Even if they can see them, it might be impossible for them to avoid them without putting themselves in danger of being struck by a vehicle.

A motorcyclist who hits grass clippings may lose control of their vehicle. This can cause them to suffer an injury in the fall. They may also be struck by a vehicle when they lose control. Serious injuries can necessitate urgent medical care, which can be costly. Seeking compensation from the liable party can help the victim to offset these costs.
