Motorcyclists: be seen and be safe

On Behalf of | Dec 12, 2024 | Motorcycle Accidents

Florida is a great state for motorcyclists. Traveling along the Gulf Coast can make worry and stress disappear.

But even a motorcyclist’s paradise comes with some dark clouds. In 2022, Florida had the highest rate of motorcycle deaths.

Why motorcycle accidents are usually fatal

Motorcyclists don’t have a passenger vehicle’s protective barriers and safety devices. The lack of seatbelts, airbags and metal enclosure leaves riders exposed in an accident. Even a minor accident can result in broken bones, severe road rash and other serious injuries because there is nothing to cushion the impact.

High speeds can amplify the severity of the accidents. The speed limit on I-75 is 70 miles per hour. Traveling at such a rate makes it harder for motorcyclists to avoid road hazards or regain control when something goes wrong. Many of these fatal accidents occur because motorists fail to see the motorcycle.

Sharing the road safely is everyone’s responsibility, but here is what motorcyclists can do to make sure they are visible:

  • Ride with your lights on at all times, but especially in inclement weather and low-light conditions
  • Do a quick walk around your bike before each ride to ensure headlights, brake lights and turn signals are properly working
  • Wear reflective riding gear
  • Put reflective tape on your helmet
  • Use your horn if you see a vehicle making a left turn in front of you

To prevent extensive injuries, you should wear a helmet, heavy-duty riding jacket, pants and gloves. Furthermore, consider a rider’s safety course to learn new skills or brush up on your old ones.

However, even with all the precautions, there is the potential for a crash. Medical expenses can quickly add up, and your financial situation becomes even more precarious if you’re out of work during your recovery. If you, or a loved one, has been in a severe motorcycle accident with another vehicle, it’s imperative that you meet with someone who can help you receive compensation for your injuries.
