Distracted driving is an ongoing problem in Florida and across the nation. Although many states, including Florida, have taken steps to try and prevent it from happening and educated drivers as to the dangers, it is a behavior that is difficult to regulate and nearly impossible to stop.

A survey from Liberty Mutual Insurance indicates that, as generally expected, younger people tend to drive while distracted. However, other age groups drive while distracted more than originally thought. The study centered around drivers in the U.S. and in other parts of the world. More than 8,000 drivers took part. Millennials were found to be the likeliest to use their phones when driving. In the U.S., 86% stated they used their devices when they were behind the wheel. By comparison, 72% of those in Generation X said the same, while 49% of Baby Boomers admitted to it.

The activities conducted on the devices went beyond phone calls. 53% of Millennials said they texted or sent emails. 36% of Generation X and 11% of Baby Boomers said the same. 33% of Millennials used social media when they drove. It was 15% for Generation X and 3% for Baby Boomers. 63% of Millennials also stated they felt it was appropriate to multitask when driving. This was less likely for older people with 37% of Baby Boomers and 54% of Generation X taking part in these behaviors.

Distracted driving and other treacherous behaviors on the road such as speeding can cause auto accidents with injuries and fatalities. When there is a crash, the evidence is essential when considering a lawsuit. Medical expenses, lost income and other problems often accompany auto accidents. If there is a fatality, the family left behind will need help in achieving justice. A law firm that has experience in distracted driving auto accidents should be consulted with to determine how to move forward with a lawsuit.
