There is a handy "to do" checklist to follow if you are involved in an auto accident:
- Get all important information from all witnesses including the name, address, telephone numbers and insurance information of any other drivers, vehicle owners, and even bystanders or other witnesses to the accident.
- Cooperate with the police.
- Check with police to make sure you file an accident report and fill out other forms.
- Do not admit fault.
- Do not give a recorded statement to any investigator or insurance adjuster until you have consulted a qualified attorney.
- Notify your insurance company as soon as possible. Do not delay this step as you could jeopardize your claim by failing to notify your carrier in time.
- Seek medical attention immediately. Have a physical checkup with your doctor immediately or as soon as possible. If an ambulance arrives at the scene, seriously consider going to the hospital. Often people in accidents are hurt far more seriously than they realize at the time. Even if you were examined at the scene of the accident or at a nearby hospital, see your doctor as soon as possible after the accident for a follow-up appointment and checkup. Neck and back injuries commonly do not begin to really hurt until three or four days after an accident, when the adrenalin has worn off and the full magnitude of the soreness and stiffness begins to set in. Be careful about telling medical providers and police officers that you are not hurt before you have had a full opportunity to evaluate your possible injuries with a qualified physician who specializes in automobile accident-related traumatic injuries.
- Know Your Rights. As soon as possible after the accident, schedule an appointment with a law firm such as Kimsey & DeBari, P.A. or another attorney who is experienced in automobile accident law to discuss what you should be doing to protect your legal rights. It is very important to know your rights before giving any statements to insurance adjusters. Call Kimsey & DeBari, P.A. for a free consultation and a detailed review and analysis of your case including settlement possibilities, as well as all insurance benefits that may be available to you.
